Family Learning in HMP Wealston

The UK government has recognised the potential for learning to build cohesion in a family where one parent is in prison, and to reduce the likelihood of re-offending. As part of this movement, the Family Learning Signature has been used in HMP Wealston to support and develop their Family Learning programme for prisoners.

Signature workshops have brought numbers of families together to assess their barriers to learning and identify areas where the prison can offer support, both to the prisoner and the family.  Critically, this process has acted as a catalyst not just for discussion and debate between family members, but as an encouragement for prisoners to engage with the offender learning opportunities on offer to them.
